About
Alasdair Ross

I've been playing drums and guitar for 30 years, and I've gigged across Winchester, Southampton, London, Cardiff, Oxford, Bath, and Bristol in all kinds of setups: duos, 3-5 piece bands, jazz big band, and even a 12-piece bells ensemble.
Since 2003 I've also made electronic music, working in Ableton Live and ProTools. That production background feeds directly into my teaching, especially for students who want to record and release music to a radio-ready standard.
I've been teaching for over 10 years, including the last 3 years at primary, secondary, and sixth form schools in Bristol, Thornbury, and Dursley.
The Gary story
My left index finger is called Gary. A dog bit it while I was working as a postman, and doctors performed unique surgery to ensure I retained as much functionality as possible. I mention it because students notice, and because it's actually part of why I'm a better teacher — everyone has physical challenges to work around, and I've spent years adapting my technique. If I can play guitar well after that injury, you can definitely learn.
For parents and exams
If you are bringing your child to the home studio, there is a comfortable waiting room available with tea, coffee and wifi on request, which you are welcome to use.
Progress reports can be provided at any point on request, so parents can stay clear on what is being covered and what the next steps are.
Many exam boards accept video submissions as well as traditional face-to-face examinations. I can prepare your student for the exam requirements and, with your consent, record their performance. For a flat rate of £30 I will edit and compile a video for submission to the exam board.
